VERÔNICA ALKMIM FRANÇA multidisciplinary artist/photographer has lived for many years in Sweden and Brazil. Graduated in Fine Arts, Photography and Communication. In her portfolio includes photographs, sculptures, wearables, scenarios, textiles, and reflects her cultural identity since her frequent travel between Brazil and Sweden has fostered in her a certain turning away from conventional artistic venues. Born in Brazil she emerged during the 90,’s as one of the pioneers of wearable art in Brazil fostering interpretations that brought with them innumerable discussions between the fine line that separate design, art and fashion and inspiring emerging generations. Verônica's work was also highlighted by the precious photographic documentation of her artistic works and recently her revelation as an authorial photographer.

Artist Statement

I’m a Brazilian born artist living and working in Sweden and Brazil since many years. I want my art to serve a communicative function in society, to be a conversation and not speech. In order to do this, I seek to break down the barriers which make art seem like something mystical and impossible for ordinary people to understand. I seek in my art the existential in everyday life, to achieve a sort of integrity or balance in the individual and society. My work consistently explores the unity of body, soul and nature with focus on mutations, spirituality and evidently the connection of all this. Over the course of many decades my work evolved continuously bringing many interpretations since it communicates with many expressions that can be in fine arts, photography or even social approaches including different kinds of disadvantaged people which creates opportunities for them that lead to social action, and pertinent issues connected with sustainability and the environment in many aspects. The image is a central point in for me, not only authorial but also accident documentations and creations with and from photographic captures. We live in an era of ” use-and-throw-away,” in which we achieve an illusion of controlling our physical and inner lives with our purchasing and consumption. The politically correct façade we inhabit becomes a prison, and we have no possibility to distance ourselves from this infinite world of conventional symbols. Reversing the trend of mass consumption and far from social networks, I examine the "culture of excess" through the effects of the consumer society, the limits of advertising in the world of liquid modernity (Bauman), the rapid destruction of the environment, the stress of a modern society that increasingly covers itself in the illusion of completeness, the widely connected world and its changing aesthetic. Technology connects us but distances us as well. I look for another place in my art, where a "real" connection can be possible. Currently, my work is being structured and cataloged to make more choices in the field of art and culture.

VERÔNICA ALKMIM FRANÇA multidisciplinar artist/photographer has lived for many years in Sweden and Brazil. Graduated in Fine Arts, Photography and Communication. In her portifolio includes sculptures, wearables, photos, scenarios, textiles, among others and reflects her cultural identity since her frequent travel between Brazil and Sweden has fostered in her a certain turning away from conventional artistic venues.

Veronica's work evolved continuously bringing many interpretations since it communicates with all the expressions of her work, be it in the fine arts, photography or even social approaches, individual or collective, always with a connection with the domestic, considering everyday life. The image is a central point in her work, not only authorial but also the documentation of her three-dimensional works and also creations with and from photographic productions.

Reversing the trend of mass consumption and far from social networks, she always questions the culture of excess and its changing aesthetics in today's world and works with disadvantaged people, which creates visibility for these groups and cultural social actions.

Veronica's works were exhibited at Palácio das Artes, Belo Horizonte; Fundação Cultural de Curitiba; Casa das Rosas, São Paulo. In Europe and Asia, at the Barbican Centre, London; National Costume Museum, Lisbon; Kulturhuset, Stockholm; Dunkerskulturhus, Helsingborg; Cheongju, South Korea; Anna Akhmatova Museum in Saint Petersburg, Praxis Gllary in USA, Berlin Photo Week in Germany, and has participated in residencies and received honorable mentions from the institutions NIFCA, Konstnärsnänmden The Swedish Grants Art Comiteé, Längmanska Kulturfonden, Helge Axsons Jonsson.

Between 2004 and 2014 she was a producer and curator of the collection of photographer “Chichico Alkmim”, her grandfather, currently in the custody of the IMS, Instituto Moreira Salles, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

She is one of the winners of FEMALE IN FOCUS International Photography Award 2022 of the British Journal of Photography's – 1894 ,BRASILIA PHOTO SHOW 2022, CHROMATIC INTERNATIONAL PHOTO AWARDS, MONOCHROME PHOTO INTERNATIONAL AWARDS, nominated for RE-FOCUS INTERNATIONAL AWARDS, 2nd Place WINNER in Photomanipulation of FAPA - FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS, nominated for COLOR INTERNATIONAL PHOTO AWARDS, RE-FOCUS COLOR INTERNATIONAL AWARDS, has participate in the WOMEN IN PHOTOGRAPHY Exhibition in Glasgow, Scotland in 2023, winner of FAPA - FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS, honorable mention in PX3 PRIX DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE DE PARIS, IPA INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS, BUDAPEST PHOTO AWARDS, AESTHETICA MAGAZINE PRIZE, PISPA-PARIS INTERNATIONAL STREET PHOTO AWARDS and currently in collaborating with WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment) and The Sheffield University on the CATA project - Climate Change and Waste Pickers, which was on display at Memorial Minas Gerais Vale, Belo Horizonte, Brazil and will participate at The Mind Festival in Sheffield, England in september 2024.

In recent years she has worked intensively in research and productions in which the image has been her visual narrative and has been published in the international journals as Aesthetica Magazine, Contemporary Art Curator Magazine, Divide, Boomer.

The artist fosters an analysis of the "state of the art", examined through the effects of the consumer society, of the rapid destruction of the environment, and of the stress on what is considered a modern society that increasingly covers itself in the illusion of completeness.

Currently, Veronica’s work is being structured and cataloged in order to make possible more choices in the field of art and culture. Thus, exhibitions, events, and instances can be more constructive, creative, and interesting for the public.
