Cameron Lings is a contemporary artist and sculptor. He is originally from the industrial town of Scunthorpe, UK, and is now based in North Yorkshire, where his vastly experimental practice often questions elements of space, time, environment and statistics; whilst combining and forever re-inventing aspects of site-specific Modernism, Brutalism and Minimalism.
Artist Statement
“Throughout my extensive and varied practice of sculptural work, I present how layered symbolism becomes a vital aspect within my artwork. Within this, variants of shape, scale, texture, form and colour are considered and executed, in order to bring a unique environment to a space. Here, material choice is also considered not only for its sculptural properties, but its contextual references too; I find this allows the medium to speak just as high as the appearance, ultimately allowing another layer of contextual depth to an artwork.
Primary and secondary research become important factors throughout my practice. Usually, this corresponds with patterns, activity and traits throughout our contemporary world. These will often link to themes regarding our environment, and the ever-contrasting imbalance between our natural and man-made world. However, regarding more recent works, the research aspect of my practice leans toward asking the ‘unanswerable questions’ about our so-called-familiar world.
‘Time’ and ‘Space’ are themes which re-surface within bodies of work. Within my current practice, I bring together conceptual, biological, mathematical and hypothetical-based research, and through the means of a body of 2D and 3D artwork, depict how our current understanding of time is something that can forever be brought into question. Once again, symbolism, material choice and research are all chosen wisely in order to form, not only a visually appealing artwork, but and thought-provoking statement.”
